Why You Might Consider Booking a Sunrise Photography Session? | Indianapolis Family Photographer

The long summer days in Indianapolis are wonderful and exciting for anyone who has has to endure the cold and dark winter months, but this also becomes a challenge for many of us with young children. Trying to wrangle a 2 year-old into bed while people are still jumping on the trampoline out back and mowing their lawns is not for the weak, trust me.

This also leads to some late times for sunset sessions. If you have every inquired about a session with me you will notice that my photography calendar is set around sunrise and sunset times to ensure we can get the highest quality images and that gorgeous warm light. Most people envision evening sessions because getting up early can be tough, but here are 5 reasons why you might consider booking a sunrise session for your next family session.

Your Family Is Busy

As a mom myself, I know that every family is very busy! Kids activities and sports, evening business meetings, groceries to pick up, meals to prep and church to attend, the list goes on… because of this morning can be a great way to complete your session before you busy day gets started. You can be up, dressed and done with photos before any of your weekend obligations begin!

Kids Are (Usually) Early Risers

This is particularly the case for young children. I myself am a night owl, but my little one hasn’t ever slept in past 7 a.m. Little ones are usually a bit happier at 7 a.m. than they are at 7 p.m… or later depending on your session date. In order to get the best light for your session, I suggest sunrise or sunset for your session. As I mentioned, sunset is very late in the summer season and because of this sunrise might be a great option for your family!

All Ready for the Day

Once we meet for your session and complete your photos or film, your family is ready to go for the day. Everyone is looking nice and hopefully energized by our great morning together. Perhaps you go out for brunch afterwards, go to church as a family or spend the day doing one of your favorite activities. Just another added perk to getting started when the sun rises.

Locations are Less Crowded

During the peak fall season some of the popular Indianapolis family photography locations are extra crowded, especially at sunset. However sunrise is normally much less busy. This leaves us with plenty of space to explore and document your family with beautiful surroundings, plenty of time and very few distractions.

The Light is Fabulous

All of the images in this post were taken at sunrise. We all love the warm glow of the evening sunset, but the colorful and crisp morning sunrise can prove to photograph just as well, if not sometimes better. Looking out our window each morning I am often stopped in my tracks by the beauty of the first light. If your family might do best at this time of day, I encourage you to consider booking your Indianapolis family photography session near sunrise! Get in touch soon to snag a sunrise session spot on my calendar.

Extended Family Photography in Downtown Indianapolis

When extended families come together it is perfect time to capture some memories through photographs. I loved meeting this sweet family down near the canal in downtown Indianapolis. We had so much fun letting the kiddos run around and play while the adults joined in on the fun.

As you will see in the images below this family was filled with love, connection and character! There is nothing better than getting to see grandparents with grandkids, aunts and uncles, sisters with their mom and the special connection between cousins.

Indianapolis Lifestyle Family Photography & Family Films

This past year I have had the chance to truly grow along side another family. They took a chance on me to document their family, as I was continuing to build my business.

This little man, who is now a big one-year-old, was the focus of my first Fresh 48 session. Their family welcomed me into their home many times and they recently let me create a family film for them as I build my portfolio.

Mom and I have known each other longer than I have known any of my friends. We are true life-long friends. The kind you could call for any thing, any time, even though you might go months without talking to or seeing each other.

Seeing her family grow and getting to document it was such a sweet gift. I wish them all the best as the years go by and I cannot wait to document their future milestones.

Here is a bit more about what you can expect when you choose to work with Kelli White Photography for your family photography.

How to Book?

After we connect through email, web or social I will send you my booking calendar with specific details about your session and any available dates. You can choose any date and time that works for you and place your retainer at the same time. You will also get a link to a session agreement and questionnaire so I can learn more about your family.

This information helps me to prepare for your session, scout out any location ideas you have and gather some info about your personalities and interests. At this point I will be very excited for your session and looking forward to meeting you!

Now on to the fun part… choosing what to wear for your family photos

After you have booked, I will send you a link to my online styling service that will give you ideas and help you to plan out your outfits. I recently wrote a post detailing the service, so you can view this to get an idea of what it offers. I love how it saves you time, provides great and affordable style options and allows you to order online if you so wish! I also wrote a post that offers some additional guidance on styling your session.

What to Know Before Your Session

Finally before we meet I will send you a final email with some last minute reminders to help ensure we are all set on time, date and location. This email will also include your final invoice to be paid prior to your session and information about digital file delivery and printing options.

I also like to remind families that my photography session style is relaxed, connected and candid. I want you to focus on loving your family and I will do the rest. While I will try to get a fairly traditional picture at the beginning of the session, you will not spend the entire session smiling at the camera. I won’t tell your kids to “say cheese” but I may chase them around the park or ask them to feed my silly stuffed owl in order to get some genuine smiles. :)

Once You Arrive

When you arrive at the session location, I will normally be gathering my gear or ready to go right outside my silver subaru (I love my little wagon!). Don’t be too surprised if I spend the first few moments introducing myself to your kiddos. I want them to feel comfortable with me before I start taking pictures, like a family friend, and not like a stranger with a big scary camera. I also like to walk a little bit before our first image, to get to know you more, catch up and connect. Again, you are now my friends and I want everyone to feel relaxed and happy for picture time.

Finally… we will create some memories!

Now that we are all connected and officially friends, I will direct you and your family through some different locations and poses. The key for the adults to remember is to spend the time looking at your beautiful family and enjoying the time together. I will work on getting your kids to laugh or smile (or be serious if that is their personality), and will probably make a total fool out of myself at some point in order to do so - no shame. I want to capture your family’s true personality, unique connection and the joy that always shines through in every session. Each family session lasts about 45 minutes (sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more) but I always allow for flexibility depending on your needs.

After the Session

Once we are finished we will all say goodbye and hopefully you will all leave feeling energized and pleased. The BEST compliment for me is when mom or dad gets to the end of the session and says “That was actually a lot of fun!” I want you all to enjoy the experience and the time you get to spend with your family. Even when a child has an unhappy moment during the session or you think we didn’t get many ”good photos” …I promise you can trust me!

Delivery

Within 1-2 weeks I will send you a link to your family slideshow set to music that has some of the best highlights from your session. This will be for you to download and keep, and/or share with family and friends. After this (2-3 weeks) I will send all of the high-res digital files in an online password protected viewing gallery. From here you can order prints, download your images and have the images for any of your personal use.

Thank You

After your session I will stay in touch. I’ve been known to send emails, holiday gifts, or thank you cards. I appreciate everyone who inquires, or decides to book a session with me. You are supporting me and my little family and I want you all to feel valued and respected. I LOVE my career and being able to document the love and connection of so many wonderful families makes my heart sing! Peace and blessings in the year ahead. I hope to see you soon!
